Accessories
It pays to take the time to gather your paint accessories before you begin a painting project. You need some accessories for your preparation, others during the project and the rest for clean up. If everything is ready before you begin you can spend more of your time painting.
Preparing for the project
Preparation is time consuming. It is also the most important step in a successful painting project.You need drop cloths to cover the areas you do not want spattered. Painter's tape needs to be applied around baseboards, window frames and door frames. Surfaces need to be cleaned and filled with putty and caulking if there are any areas needing repair.The putty needs to be smoothed with a putty knife and sanded when dry.
Painting
There are different sizes of buckets you can purchase. Pour paint in the bucket to make it easier to mix and carry around the room. You may choose a plastic or metal bucket. A paint-can opener will be needed to pry the lid off the can. You can mix the paint with a stir stick or a mixer that can be attached to a drill for easier electric mixing. If you are using a roller you need to pour paint into a paint tray. Roller covers are available in a variety of materials such as nylon, wool and microfiber.Choose one that fits your budget and needs. You also need a brush to get close to the ceiling and edges. Choose one that has the quality and firmness you desire. You also need a step ladder.
Clean up
You need solvent to clean your brush and roller cover unless you use latex paint. If you use latex, your brushes can be cleaned in warm soapy water. If solvent is needed to clean your brushes, put them in warm soapy water as a second step. Wrap the cleaned roller cover in heavy paper.
