Paint Frosting - Causes & Solutions
Frosting paint, a white, a salty-looking substance on the paint surface, can appear on any color paint. However, it is most noticeable on darker colors, and is often mistaken for efflorescence on masonry. It appears mostly under eases and on open porch ceilings. It is eliminated with wire-brushing or sanding depending on the surface, then the surface is rinsed and a primer is applied.
What causes paint frost
Paint frosting most often forms in protected areas, such as under eaves and on open porch ceilings, where the rain and dew cannot wash away the dirt. It is also caused by the use dark colors formulated with calcium carbonate.
Removing paint frosting is difficult at times
Removing paint frosting is not easy; washing away is not an option. It can also reoccur as a bleed-through when it is covered with a new coat of paint. In severe cases, it can interfere with adhesion of new paint. Proper tools are required to remove it correctly.
What tools to use to remove paint frost
The best way to get rid of paint frost on masonry is to use a wire brush, taking your time to evenly remove all of it. On a wood surface it is best to sand off the paint frost; sand the surface carefully and thoroughly, making sure to remove all of it. After the paint frost is removed, apply the proper primer.
Use the correct primer
After you have carefully and thoroughly wire-brushed or sanded the surface clean, apply an alkyd-based primer prior to adding a coat of high-quality exterior paint as needed.
Paint frosting is an eyesore on many homes with dark paints or masonry. It is eliminated with a little hard work and reduced by avoiding the use of dark colored paint on certain areas of the house. Take the time to remove it all prior to giving the area a fresh coat of primer and paint and it is sure to withstand the weather a bit better.
Primers and Finishes
A alkyd primer is essential to avoid a recurrence of bleeding through the new finish coat only.
