Galvanized Metal Peeling - Causes & Solutions

Galvanized Metal Peeling - Causes & Solutions

It is every business and homeowner's nightmare when peeling paint reveals bare metallic surfaces. The bad news is there are many things that can cause the unsightly peeling; the good news is there are ways to avoid this problem in the future.

Causes

Most causes of paint peeling on galvanized metal have to do with the improper preparation of the surface. Improper priming or the lack of any priming on the metal surface can cause paint to peel. Improper cleaning or failing to clean the surface before painting leads to peeling, as does painting too soon after cleaning. The presence of rust, dust, oil and other matter can interfere with the adhesion of paint. Improper choice of paint adds to the probability of peeling. Choosing the wrong paint for a galvanized metal surface also causes paint to peel.

Solutions

The solutions all begin with the preparation of the metal surface. If the galvanized surface is new, allowing it to weather a bit can add some roughness to the surface so that the paint adheres well to the surface. Remove all dust, rust, dirt and other metal from the surface of the metal. Let the surface dry properly after cleaning, and apply a good coat of corrosion-resistant primer to prepare the surface. Choose a paint that is designed for the type of surface you are painting, such as an oil base or vinyl latex paint.

Warning

New galvanized or bared galvanized surfaces need far more attention then older surfaces or those that bare prior to getting painted. Aggressive cleaning with mineral spirits helps prepare the surface to receive paint.

Keep in mind as you work with galvanized metal surfaces that preparation is key to the painting process. With proper preparation the paint on the surface of galvanized metal can last for years.

Primers and Finishes
