Wax Bleeding - Causes & Solutions

Wax bleeding refers to hideous discoloration or a wet, waxy effect on hardboard siding. Waxy substances used in reconstituted wood products cause dirt pickup or mildew, causing a nasty experience. Wax bleeding, while quite common, indicates improper treating of the surface before application of paint. Even the most severe case of wax bleeding, however, can be cured.

Causes

Many factors contribute to wax bleeding. Lack of proper application of primer to the hardboard before applying paint can cause this problem. It may also occur if the hardboard siding weather before the application of paint. Other possible causes include application of dark paint, which absorbs large amounts of heat, using low quality paints, lack of adequate coats, exposure to direct sun, usage of paint containing low amount of binders. Combined with all the other issues mentioned, wax bleeding affects the areas that have the fewest coats of paint due to the lack of protection from moisture.

Solutions

First, identify the problem. This can be done by placing a few drops of household bleach on the affected area and checking if there is bleaching on the surface. If no bleaching occurs, wax bleeding most likely caused the stain. For light stains, properly clean the affected area with a detergent solution. For severe cases, clean the surface thoroughly with solvents like mineral spirit and then allow the surface to dry. Apply two or three coats of a quality exterior primer and then apply paint on top of it.

You can reduce the risk of wax bleeding if you work proactively. Pay attention the surface being worked on, use suitable primer and paint on the surface and use appropriate technique to apply it to increase your chances of a lasting, unstained finish.
