Paint Wearing Away from Scrubbing - Causes & Solutions
If you have artistically-inclined children, it is very likely that you have experienced childish crayon or pencil writing or art on your walls. Your first instinct is probably to attempt to clean it off, but if you do that, you are sure to find the paint wearing away from scrubbing. Below are a few ways to avoid this kind of scrubbing failure.
Different paint
Although this is not always something that you can control, the biggest factor in whether or not you can clean anything off your walls is the kind of paint used. If you are a homeowner, you should have no trouble buying the right kind of paint: a high-quality, brand name glossy finish paint. Glossy finishes are much easier to clean than matte or semi-gloss finishes, but for aesthetic reasons they are often a less desirable choice for your entire home.
Different writing implements
Children should never play with permanent markers, but there are some markers specifically designed to provide easy clean up of walls or other media. Also, while crayons are sometimes cleaned off your walls without your scrubbing off all the paint in the process, it is better to give your children chalk and point them toward some concrete surfaces outside. Chalk hoses right off of concrete, and even if your children decide to try some chalk on the interior of your home, it is easier to clean if you have used a glossy paint.
Do not use water
The common-sense approach that soap and water cleans anything simply does not apply to scrubbing painted walls. Water destroys drywall and can even lead to mold, a major health hazard. You can sometimes get away with using a little bit of water on glossy-painted walls, but anything more than a few drops is ill-advised. The same is true of most water-based cleaning products, which is almost all of them.
Although it is bound to happen to you at some point, you are not destined to scrub every wall in your home's interior raw of paint. By following the three simple tips above, you can put "scrubbing failure" behind you.
