Touch-Up Paint Discoloration - Causes & Solutions
You have probably seen this before: you paint your walls but your children decide to add crayon. You decide to repaint the affected part of the wall. However, you want to avoid touch-up failure that draws eyes towards the touched-up spot on the wall. Following a few guidelines can ensure that your wall continues to have an even tone.
Keep the paint can
If you have ever had to repaint a room, you know that you cannot accurately eyeball color. Keeping the original paint can with left-over paint is the only sure way to match your color later. However, paint separates over time so you must mix the paint to match the color. You can take it to the local paint shop and have them re-shake it for you if there is a lot of paint left over. Even if there is not enough to complete the job, take the can in anyway because the paint shop can mix you a new batch.
Paint more than needed
You have to account for age on your walls. Over time, all paints fade a little. If you paint a coat on and notice touch-up paint discoloration, you can assume that the paint on your walls has faded a bit over time. In this case, you should paint well over and around the affected area. You might have to paint an entire wall if there is nothing to break up the texture and color. Paint using even strokes, and make sure you do not drip paint everywhere. Having just enough paint on the roller or brush is key.
When painting a damaged, faded or dinged-up area, taking care to make things right can go a long way towards saving you time and money. Match the color with a sample from your original paint can, not from the color catalog at the store. Use broad strokes with ample paint to maintain an even coat that hides the fact that something needed covering in the first place.
